Asad is a PhD candidate at Western Sydney University, focusing on the impact of heat stress on wheat production and quality in Australia. With global wheat demand rising, and wheat production threatened by future climate change: Asad’s research investigates heat tolerance in wheat and its impact on grain quality (gluten and sugar content).
The project combines field and laboratory research to identify heat-tolerant wheat genotypes with superior physiological and quality traits, contributing to both academic knowledge, and practical solutions for Industry and Australian growers.
This research also aims to support the sustainability of Australian food systems by providing breeders with improved germplasm and tools for selecting wheat varieties that withstand increasing temperatures. Asad is working under supervisory team includes Professor Zhonghua Chen, (Prof. Zhonghua Chen – Future Food Systems / Western Sydney University), Associate Prof. Jay Bose (Jay Bose – Western Sydney University ) and Dr Mark Jones (Mark Jones – Western Sydney University ). He is a recipient of a Future Food System CRC top-up scholarship. For more information about his project click here.
