Pratima Rana Shahi is a PhD candidate at the University of New England in Armidale, NSW. Her project is focused on illustrating the impact of night-time warming on the ability of wheat plants to photosynthesize and respire, thereby contributing to explaining the effects and impacts of global warming on crop productivity.
“I am particularly excited about this research project because it involves exploring the acclimation capacity of a diverse range of Australian wheat cultivars bred from 1901 to 2012, and investigating how these cultivars adapt to warm night temperatures will be fascinating,” Pratima says.
Pratima’s work will aid programs targeting resilience of wheat grain production to climate change as well as contribute to global food security. She is the recipient of a Future Food Systems CRC top-up scholarship.
